Reader's Question:

Can my daughter drive her sister's car if she only has an Arizona learner's permit? She doesn't have student auto insurance. Will she be covered by her older sister's auto insurance, as well?

Erin

Phoenix, AZ

Yes, your daughter may surely drive her sister's car in the State of Arizona with just a learner's permit. However, she needs to be supervised in the car by an adult with a full valid driver's license. If she is just 15 years old, she needs to obtain any proof or written certification that her driving instructor allowed her to drive with adult supervision. These guidelines are unbendable and should be rigorously followed. Failure to follow these may result in the cancellation of your daughter's learner's permit. Moreover, you or your other daughter may be held responsible for negligence if she is found to be driving without supervision.

Before you allow her to drive the car, though, you may want to sign her up for a driving course. Here, she'll learn all the basics before she even gets behind the wheel. She will be taught the responsibilities that come from having the freedom to drive. She will learn valuable driving etiquette, as well. If the reason you are asking has something to do with your daughter's practical exam, bear in mind that she needs to complete 30 hours of supervised time behind the wheel. Additionally, 10 hours have to be devoted to nighttime driving.

If she ever gets into a mishap while driving her sister's car, she will be covered provided that she is listed under her auto insurance policy. Although most insurers would provide financial assistance to anyone driving the car provided that the owner knew of the car's use, some still do not because of limited coverage. So it would be wise for your older daughter to advice her local agent about a new driver in the household. This would also be much less expensive than getting your younger daughter her own student auto insurance.
